Appendix B: Reference Information

Reference tables for variables, statistics and financial formulas, order of operations and other things to know, every ERR: message with its cause and cure, and numeric accuracy and function limits.

Variablesp. 383

Everything the calculator remembers lives in a named variable. Some names accept any real or complex number, some accept only one kind of data, and some belong to the calculator and cannot be stored to at all.

User Variablesp. 383

These are the names you may store to. Names that are limited to one data type refuse anything else: for example, storing a plain number to a list name gives ERR:DATA TYPE.

User variables
Variable namesWhat they can holdNotes
A through Z and θReal or complex numbersThe calculator itself updates X, Y, R, θ and T while graphing, so avoid using them to keep ordinary numbers.
L₁ through L₆Lists onlyYou cannot store another type of data to a list name.
[A] through [J]Matrices onlyYou cannot store another type of data to a matrix name.
Pic1 through Pic9, Pic0Pictures onlyCreated with the DRAW STORE menu.
GDB1 through GDB9, GDB0Graph databases onlySaved graph settings.
Str1 through Str9, Str0Strings onlyText strings.
Y₁ through Y₉ and Y₀; X₁T/Y₁T through X₆T/Y₆T; r₁ through r₆; u(n), v(n), w(n)Any string of characters, functions, instructions or variablesYou store them directly or through the Y= editor. The calculator only decides whether the contents are valid when it evaluates the function.
Tutorial

Try to store a number in a list name

List names only accept lists. See what the calculator does when you break that rule, and how to leave the error screen.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Type 5→L₁: the number 5, then STO►, then 2ndL1 (L₁). Press ENTER.
    5STO►2ndL1ENTER
  2. The error screen offers 1:Quit and 2:Goto. Press 1 to Quit back to the home screen.
    1
  3. A list is allowed. Store a one-element list instead: {5}→L₁.
    2nd{52nd}STO►2ndL1ENTER

Archive Variablesp. 383

Data, programs and most other variables can be moved from RAM to the user data archive. There they cannot be edited or deleted by accident, and the RAM they occupied is free for other work.

An archived variable is shown with an asterisk (*) in front of its name in memory listings. Trying to use or edit one gives ERR:ARCHIVED, and archiving when the archive has no room gives ERR:ARCHIVE FULL (see ERR:ARCHIVED and ERR:ARCHIVE FULL).

System Variablesp. 383

System variables are the settings and results that the calculator keeps for itself. Some of them you may store to, and some are read-only.

System variables
GroupExamplesCan you store to them?
Window variablesXmin, Xmax, Xscl, ΔX, XFact, Tstep, PlotStart, nMin and the other window variablesYes. They must be real numbers.
ZOOM variablesZXmin, ZXmax, ZXscl, ZTstep, ZPlotStart, Zu(nMin) and the other ZOOM variablesYes. They must be real numbers.
Reserved statistics and test variablesn, x̄, Sx, σx, minX, maxX, Σy, Σy², Σxy, a, b, c, RegEQ, x₁, x₂, y₁, z, t, F, χ², p̂, x̄₁, Sx₁, n₁, lower, upper, r², R² and the other statistics variablesNo. They are reserved for the calculator, which writes them itself after a calculation.
Note The calculator can change window variables on its own, for example after a ZOOM command. Do not use them to hold data you want to keep.

Statistics Formulasp. 384

This section gives the formulas behind the Logistic and SinReg regressions, ANOVA(, 2-SampFTest and 2-SampTTest. The other statistics commands use textbook definitions.

Logisticp. 384

Logistic regression fits y = c ÷ (1 + a·e^(−bx)). It uses a nonlinear, recursive least-squares search to estimate a, b and c, trying to make this cost function J as small as possible:

ItemFormula
Cost functionJ = Σᵢ₌₁ᴺ [ c ÷ (1 + a·e^(−b·xᵢ)) − yᵢ ]²
Residual error for point ic ÷ (1 + a·e^(−b·xᵢ)) − yᵢ

J is the sum of the squares of the residual errors. Here x is the independent-variable list, y is the dependent-variable list and N is the dimension of the lists.

SinRegp. 384

Sine regression fits y = a·sin(bx + c) + d. It applies the same kind of nonlinear, recursive least-squares search, estimating a, b, c and d so that the cost function J is as small as possible:

ItemFormula
Cost functionJ = Σᵢ₌₁ᴺ [ a·sin(b·xᵢ + c) + d − yᵢ ]²
Residual error for point ia·sin(b·xᵢ + c) + d − yᵢ

Again x is the independent-variable list, y is the dependent-variable list and N is the dimension of the lists.

ANOVA(p. 385

The one-way ANOVA F statistic is the ratio of two mean squares. Each mean square is a sum of squares divided by its degrees of freedom.

QuantityFormula
F statisticF = FactorMS ÷ ErrorMS
Mean squaresFactorMS = FactorSS ÷ Factordf; ErrorMS = ErrorSS ÷ Errordf
Sums of squaresFactorSS = Σᵢ₌₁ᴵ nᵢ·(x̄ᵢ − x̄)²; ErrorSS = Σᵢ₌₁ᴵ (nᵢ − 1)·Sxᵢ²
Degrees of freedomFactordf = I − 1 (numerator df of F); Errordf = Σᵢ₌₁ᴵ (nᵢ − 1) (denominator df of F)
SymbolMeaning
INumber of populations (lists)
x̄ᵢMean of list i
SxᵢStandard deviation of list i
nᵢLength of list i
x̄Mean of all the lists together

2-SampFTestp. 385

The statistic is the squared ratio of the two sample standard deviations, F = (Sx₁ ÷ Sx₂)². Sx₁ and Sx₂ have n₁ − 1 and n₂ − 1 degrees of freedom. In the formulas below f(x, n₁−1, n₂−1) is the F probability density function (Fpdf) with those degrees of freedom, and p is the reported p-value.

Alternative hypothesisp-value
σ₁ > σ₂p = the integral of f(x, n₁−1, n₂−1) from F to ∞
σ₁ < σ₂p = the integral of f(x, n₁−1, n₂−1) from 0 to F
σ₁ ≠ σ₂p ÷ 2 = the integral of f from 0 to Lbnd = the integral of f from Ubnd to ∞

For the two-sided test, [Lbnd, Ubnd] are the lower and upper limits. The F statistic is used as whichever bound gives the smaller integral, and the other bound is chosen so that the two integrals are equal.

2-SampTTestp. 386

The two-sample t statistic is t = (x̄₁ − x̄₂) ÷ S. How S and the degrees of freedom df are computed depends on whether you choose to pool the variances.

VariancesSdf
Not pooledS = √( Sx₁²÷n₁ + Sx₂²÷n₂ )df = ( Sx₁²÷n₁ + Sx₂²÷n₂ )² ÷ [ (1 ÷ (n₁−1))·(Sx₁²÷n₁)² + (1 ÷ (n₂−1))·(Sx₂²÷n₂)² ]
PooledS = Sxp·√( 1÷n₁ + 1÷n₂ )df = n₁ + n₂ − 2

For pooled variances, Sxp is the pooled sample standard deviation: Sxp = √( [ (n₁−1)·Sx₁² + (n₂−1)·Sx₂² ] ÷ df ).

Financial Formulasp. 386

These are the formulas the Finance application uses for time value of money, amortization, cash flow, interest-rate conversion and days between dates.

Time Value of Moneyp. 386

Everything starts from one equation that ties together N, PV, PMT, FV and the periodic interest rate i. When PMT is not zero, the calculator finds i by iteration (see below); the other unknowns are solved from the formulas in the table.

Quantities used in the TVM formulas
SymbolMeaning
x(.01 × I%) ÷ C/Y
yC/Y ÷ P/Y
iPeriodic interest rate: i = (1 + x)^y − 1 = e^(y·ln(x + 1)) − 1
C/YCompounding periods per year
P/YPayment periods per year
I%Interest rate per year
k0 for end-of-period payments (Pmt_End), 1 for beginning-of-period payments (Pmt_Bgn)
Gᵢ1 + i × k
Solving the TVM equation
UnknownWhen i ≠ 0When i = 0
Basic equation0 = PV + PMT·Gᵢ·[ 1 − (1 + i)^(−N) ] ÷ i + FV·(1 + i)^(−N)0 = PMT·N + PV + FV
NN = ln[ (PMT·Gᵢ − FV·i) ÷ (PMT·Gᵢ + PV·i) ] ÷ ln(1 + i)N = −(PV + FV) ÷ PMT
PMTPMT = −(i ÷ Gᵢ)·[ PV + (PV + FV) ÷ ((1 + i)^N − 1) ]PMT = −(PV + FV) ÷ N
PVPV = (PMT·Gᵢ ÷ i − FV)·(1 + i)^(−N) − PMT·Gᵢ ÷ iPV = −(FV + PMT·N)
FVFV = PMT·Gᵢ ÷ i − (1 + i)^N·(PV + PMT·Gᵢ ÷ i)FV = −(PV + PMT·N)
I%Iterate to find i, then I% = 100 × C/Y × [ e^(y·ln(x + 1)) − 1 ], where x = i and y = P/Y ÷ C/YIterate to find i, then convert as shown

When PMT = 0 there is no need to iterate: i = (−FV ÷ PV)^(1 ÷ N) − 1.

Note The N, I%, PV, PMT, FV, P/Y and C/Y values are entered in the TVM Solver, and the unknown one is found with ALPHASOLVE (SOLVE).

Amortizationp. 388

Balance, principal and interest are worked out payment by payment. RND means "round to the number of decimal places set in the display mode" and RND12 means "round to 12 decimal places". The result depends on PMT, PV, I% and the two payment numbers pmt1 and pmt2.

StepFormula
Starting balancebal(0) = RND(PV)
Interest in payment m (iterate m = 1 to pmt2)Iₘ = RND[ RND12( −i × bal(m − 1) ) ]
Balance after payment mbal(m) = bal(m − 1) − Iₘ + RND(PMT)
bal(pmt2)The balance after payment pmt2. When computing bal(), pmt2 = npmt.
ΣPrn(pmt1,pmt2)bal(pmt2) − bal(pmt1)
ΣInt(pmt1,pmt2)(pmt2 − pmt1 + 1) × RND(PMT) − ΣPrn(pmt1,pmt2)
Note ΣPrn( and ΣInt( give ERR:DOMAIN if pmt2 is smaller than pmt1.

Cash Flowp. 388

Net present value depends on the initial cash flow CF₀, the later cash flows CFⱼ, how many times each one repeats (nⱼ) and the interest rate i, where i = I% ÷ 100. Sⱼ is the running total of the repeat counts: Sⱼ = n₁ + n₂ + … + nⱼ for j ≥ 1, and S₀ = 0.

QuantityFormula
npv when i ≠ 0npv = CF₀ + Σⱼ₌₁ᴺ CFⱼ·(1 + i)^(−Sⱼ₋₁)·[ 1 − (1 + i)^(−nⱼ) ] ÷ i
npv when i = 0npv = CF₀ + Σⱼ₌₁ᴺ CFⱼ·nⱼ
Internal rate of returnirr = 100 × i, where i is the rate that makes npv = 0

The internal rate of return depends only on the initial cash flow CF₀ and the later cash flows CFⱼ and their frequencies.

Interest Rate Conversionsp. 389

Eff is the effective annual rate (percent), Nom is the nominal annual rate (percent) and CP is the number of compounding periods per year.

ConversionFormula
►Eff(Nom,CP)Eff = 100 × ( e^(CP·ln(x + 1)) − 1 ), where x = .01 × Nom ÷ CP
►Nom(Eff,CP)Nom = 100 × CP × ( e^((1 ÷ CP)·ln(x + 1)) − 1 ), where x = .01 × Eff
Tutorial

Convert a nominal rate to an effective rate

A 12% nominal rate compounded quarterly is worth a little more than 12% a year. Use the Finance menu to see how much, then convert back.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the Finance menu.
    APPS1
  2. Choose ►Eff( (item C), then type the nominal rate 12 and 4 compounding periods, and press ENTER.

Days between Datesp. 389

The dbd( function accepts or computes dates from January 1, 1950 through December 31, 2049. It uses the actual/actual day-count method: real month lengths and real year lengths.

The result is dbd( = (number of days for the second date) − (number of days for the first date), where each date is counted from a base date:

QuantityFormula
Number of Days I(Y₁ − YB) × 365 + (number of days from MB to M₁) + DT₁ + integer part of (Y₁ − YB) ÷ 4
Number of Days II(Y₂ − YB) × 365 + (number of days from MB to M₂) + DT₂ + integer part of (Y₂ − YB) ÷ 4
dbd(Number of Days II − Number of Days I
SymbolMeaning
M₁, DT₁, Y₁Month, day and year of the first date
M₂, DT₂, Y₂Month, day and year of the second date
MB, DB, YBBase month (January), base day (1) and base year (the first year after a leap year)
Tutorial

Count the days in a leap year

Dates are typed as MM.DDYY with the default date format, so January 1, 2000 is 1.0100.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the Finance menu and choose dbd( (item D).
    APPS1ALPHAD
  2. Type January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2001 and press ENTER. The year 2000 was a leap year, so the answer is 366.

Important Things You Need to Know About Your TI-84 Plusp. 391

Practical advice for the situations that confuse people most: answers that are not what you expected, the two most common error messages, and housekeeping such as contrast, backups and apps.

TI-84 Plus Resultsp. 391

When an answer is not what you expected, the cause is nearly always the order of operations or a mode setting.

The calculator uses its Equation Operating System (EOS) to decide what to evaluate first. From first to last, the order is:

  1. Functions that come before their argument, such as square root, sin( or log(.
  2. Functions that come after their argument: exponents like ², factorial, r (radians), ° (degrees) and unit conversions.
  3. Powers and roots, such as 2^5 or 5 times a square root.
  4. Permutations (nPr) and combinations (nCr).
  5. Multiplication, implied multiplication and division.
  6. Addition and subtraction.
  7. Relational functions such as > or <.
  8. The logic operator and.
  9. The logic operators or and xor.

Within the same level, EOS works from left to right, and anything in parentheses is calculated first. When the rules of algebra might be unclear, add parentheses. The guide notes that from OS 2.53 MP onward, parentheses can be pasted into an expression to show how the calculator interpreted it.

Tutorial

See order of operations at work

Three small expressions show why parentheses matter.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Multiplication happens before addition. Enter 2+3×4.
    2+3×4ENTER
  2. The negation sign binds more loosely than the square. ⁻2² means −(2²), which is −4. Press (−) then 2 then x².
    (−)2x²ENTER
  3. Add parentheses to square the negative number: (⁻2)² is 4.
    ((−)2)x²ENTER
  4. A stack of powers is evaluated from the right: 2^3^2 is 2^9, not (2^3)^2.
    2^3^2ENTER

Trigonometric functions and polar/rectangular conversions depend on the angle mode. Radian and Degree control how the calculator reads angle values. To change it:

  1. Press MODE to show the mode settings.
  2. Select Degree or Radian.
  3. Press ENTER to save the setting.
Tutorial

Switch between Radian and Degree

The same keystrokes give very different answers in the two angle modes.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. In Radian mode (the default), 30 is read as 30 radians. Enter sin(30).
    SIN30)ENTER
  2. Open the mode screen.
    MODE
  3. Move down to the Radian/Degree line, choose Degree with ▶︎ and press ENTER to select it.
    ▼︎▼︎▶︎ENTER
  4. Leave the mode screen with 2ndQUIT (QUIT).
    2ndQUIT
  5. Repeat sin(30). Thirty degrees gives exactly 0.5.
    SIN30)ENTER

ERR:DIM MISMATCH Errorp. 392

You get ERR:DIM MISMATCH when an operation uses two or more lists or matrices whose sizes do not agree. For example, if L₁ = {1,2,3,4,5} and L₂ = {1,2}, then L₁×L₂ fails because the lists have different numbers of elements.

There is a full entry, with a hands-on example, at ERR:DIM MISMATCH.

ERR:INVALID DIM Errorp. 392

ERR:INVALID DIM can appear when you graph a function that has nothing to do with statistics. The cause is a stat plot that is still switched on. Turn the stat plots off: press 2ndSTAT PLOT to open the STAT PLOTS menu and choose 4:PlotsOff.

Tutorial

Turn off all stat plots

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the STAT PLOTS menu.
    2ndSTAT PLOT
  2. Choose 4:PlotsOff to paste it, then press ENTER.
    4ENTER

The error has other causes too. See ERR:INVALID DIM.

Contrast Featurep. 392

If the contrast is set to its darkest (9) or lightest (0) level, the calculator can look broken or switched off. Adjust it with 2nd▲︎ to darken or 2nd▼︎ to lighten: press and release 2nd, then press and hold ▲︎ or ▼︎.

Tip If the emulator screen looks blank or washed out, the calculator contrast has probably been turned all the way down. Press 2nd and then hold ▲︎ to darken it step by step.

TI-84 Plus Identification Codep. 393

A real TI-84 Plus has a unique 14-character ID (digits 0–9 and letters A–F) that you can register with Texas Instruments or use to identify a lost calculator. The About screen shows the operating system version, product number, ID and certificate revision number.

Open the About screen with 2ndMEM (MEM) and choose 1:About.

Tutorial

Open the About screen

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the MEMORY menu.
    2ndMEM
  2. Choose 1:About.
    1
Note This emulator is an independent reimplementation. Its About screen identifies it as such and it has no real ID code to record.

Backupsp. 393

A calculator stores files and Apps just as a computer does, so it is a good habit to back them up using TI Connect software and a USB cable. TI Connect's own Help file has the step-by-step procedure.

Note Backups with a USB cable and TI Connect do not apply to the emulator.

Appsp. 393

Apps are software you add to the calculator the way you would add programs to a computer, to tailor it to a subject or course. Texas Instruments publishes apps for the TI-84 Plus at education.ti.com. Press APPS to see the ones installed.

TI-Cares KnowledgeBasep. 393

The TI-Cares KnowledgeBase is a website where you can search known solutions to frequently asked questions at any time of day: education.ti.com/support.

Error Conditionsp. 394

When the calculator detects a problem it stops and shows a screen titled ERR: followed by the error type, for example ERR:SYNTAX or ERR:DOMAIN. Below it is a two-item menu.

ChoiceWhat it does
1:QuitDismisses the error and returns to the home screen. A running program stops.
2:GotoReturns to where the error happened with the cursor on the problem: the expression on the home screen, the line in a program, and so on. Fix it and run it again. Some errors offer only Quit.

Each error has its own entry below, with its causes and what to do. Use the table for a quick look-up; the entries are in the same alphabetical order as the guide.

Tip Delete or unarchive something you no longer need (MEMORY menu, 2:Mem Mgmt/Del…) and try again.

ERR:ARGUMENTp. 394

A function or instruction was given the wrong number of arguments.

Check Appendix A for the exact arguments and punctuation of each function. Arguments in brackets are optional; separate arguments with commas. For example, stdDev(list[,freqlist]) can be entered as stdDev(L₁) or stdDev(L₁,L₂) because the frequency list is optional.

Tutorial

Trigger ERR:ARGUMENT

ln( takes exactly one argument. Give it two.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Type ln(1,2) and press ENTER.
    LN1,2)ENTER
  2. Choose 2:Goto to go back to the expression and edit it, or press 1 to Quit. Here we Quit.
    1
  3. With one argument the function works: ln(1) is 0.
    CLEARLN1ENTER

ERR:BAD ADDRESSp. 394

An error such as electrical interference occurred while sending or receiving an application.

Note The link cable and calculator-to-calculator transfers are not part of this emulator, so this error cannot normally appear here. It is listed because it is on the real calculator.

ERR:BAD GUESSp. 394

  • In a CALC operation, the Guess you gave is not between Left Bound and Right Bound.
  • For the solve( function or the equation solver, your guess is not between lower and upper.
  • Your guess and several points around it are undefined.
Tip Look at a graph of the function. If the equation has a solution, move the bounds or the initial guess so that the guess lies between them and the function is defined there.

ERR:BOUNDp. 394

  • In a CALC operation or with Select(, you defined Left Bound > Right Bound.
  • In fMin(, fMax(, solve( or the equation solver, you entered lower ≥ upper.
Tip Make the lower bound smaller than the upper bound.

ERR:BREAKp. 394

You pressed ON to break out of a running program, to halt a DRAW instruction or to stop the calculation of an expression. This is not a fault; it just confirms that execution was stopped.

Tip Choose 1:Quit to leave, or 2:Goto (inside a program) to see the line that was running.

ERR:DATA TYPEp. 394

You supplied a value or variable of the wrong data type.

  • A function (including implied multiplication) or instruction received an argument of an invalid type, such as a complex number where a real number is required. Check Appendix A and the relevant chapter.
  • You entered a type the editor does not allow, for example a matrix as an element in the stat list editor.
  • You tried to store the wrong kind of data, for example a matrix into a list. See User Variables for what each variable name accepts.

ERR:DIM MISMATCHp. 394

The operation involves two or more lists or matrices whose dimensions do not match. For example, multiplying L₁ by L₂ when L₁ = {1,2,3,4,5} and L₂ = {1,2} gives ERR:DIM MISMATCH because L₁ and L₂ do not have the same number of elements.

Tip Use dim( on each list to compare their sizes, then make them the same length (or use a number instead of a list).
Tutorial

Trigger and fix ERR:DIM MISMATCH

L₁ has five elements and L₂ has two. Multiply them, see the error, then recover.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Multiply the lists: 2ndL1 (L₁), ×, 2ndL2 (L₂), then ENTER.
    2ndL1×2ndL2ENTER
  2. You can choose 2:Goto to edit, or 1:Quit. Press 1 to Quit to the home screen.
    1
  3. A list times a single number needs no matching list. Enter L₁×2.
    CLEAR2ndL1×2ENTER

ERR:DIVIDE BY 0p. 395

  • You tried to divide by zero. This error is not returned while graphing: the graph simply leaves undefined values out.
  • You tried a linear regression on a vertical line.
Tutorial

Trigger ERR:DIVIDE BY 0

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Enter 1÷0.
    1÷0ENTER
  2. Press 1 to Quit back to the home screen.
    1

ERR:DOMAINp. 395

  • You gave a function or instruction an argument outside its valid range. This error is not returned while graphing. See Appendix A for each function's range.
  • You tried a logarithmic or power regression with a negative X, or an exponential or power regression with a negative Y.
  • You tried ΣPrn( or ΣInt( with pmt2 < pmt1.
Tutorial

Trigger ERR:DOMAIN and use Goto

The natural logarithm of 0 does not exist. After the error, Goto puts you back at the expression to correct it.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Enter ln(0).
    LN0ENTER
  2. Choose 2:Goto. You return to the home screen with the cursor in the expression you entered.
    2
  3. Clear the line and enter a valid argument instead: ln(1).
    CLEARLN1ENTER

ERR:DUPLICATEp. 395

You tried to create a group with a name that is already used by another group.

ERR:Duplicate Namep. 395

A variable you tried to send cannot be transmitted because the receiving calculator already has a variable with that name.

Note The link cable and calculator-to-calculator transfers are not part of this emulator, so this error cannot normally appear here. It is listed because it is on the real calculator.

ERR:EXPIREDp. 395

You tried to run an application that had a limited trial period, and that period has ended.

ERR:Error in Xmitp. 395

  • The calculator could not transmit an item. Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and that the receiving unit is in receive mode.
  • You pressed ON to break during the transmission.
  • You tried to back up from a TI-82 to a TI-84 Plus.
  • You tried to send data other than L₁ through L₆ from a TI-84 Plus to a TI-82.
  • You tried to send L₁ through L₆ to a TI-82 without using 5:Lists to TI82 on the LINK SEND menu.

ERR:INVALIDp. 395

You referenced a variable or used a function where it is not valid.

  • A function like Yₙ cannot refer to Y, Xmin, ΔX or TblStart, for example.
  • You referenced a variable or function transferred from a TI-82 that is not valid on the TI-84 Plus (for example Uₙ₋₁).
  • In Seq mode you tried to graph a phase plot without defining both of its equations.
  • In Seq mode you tried to graph a recursive sequence without giving the right number of initial conditions.
  • In Seq mode you referred to terms other than (n−1) or (n−2).
  • You chose a graph style that is not valid in the current graph mode.
  • You used Select( without at least one xyLine or scatter plot turned on.

ERR:INVALID DIMp. 396

  • You tried to graph a function that does not involve stat plots while a stat plot is switched on. Turn stat plots off: 2ndSTAT PLOT, then 4:PlotsOff (see ERR:INVALID DIM Error).
  • You gave a list dimension that is not an integer between 1 and 999.
  • You gave a matrix dimension that is not an integer between 1 and 99.
  • You tried to invert a matrix that is not square.
Tutorial

Trigger ERR:INVALID DIM with a non-square matrix

Only square matrices can be inverted. Store a one-row matrix and try.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the MATRIX NAMES menu with 2ndMATRIX and choose 1:[A]. Then press x⁻¹ for x⁻¹ and ENTER.

ERR:ITERATIONSp. 396

  • solve( or the equation solver used more iterations than allowed. Look at a graph of the function; if the equation has a solution, change the bounds, the initial guess or both.
  • irr( used more iterations than allowed.
  • The maximum number of iterations was exceeded while computing I% in the TVM Solver.

ERR:LABELp. 396

The label named in a Goto instruction is not defined by any Lbl instruction in the program. Check the spelling of both, and that the Lbl is in the same program.

ERR:MEMORYp. 396

There is not enough memory to do what you asked. Delete items from memory first (MEMORY menu, 2:Mem Mgmt/Del…) or archive some variables.

  • Recursive definitions give this error, for example graphing Y₁ = Y₁.
  • Branching out of an If/Then, For(, While or Repeat block with Goto can also give it, because the End that closes the block is never reached.

ERR:MemoryFullp. 396

  • You cannot transmit an item because the receiving unit does not have enough memory. You can skip the item or leave receive mode.
  • During a backup, the receiving unit does not have room for everything in the sending unit. A message tells you how many bytes the sending unit has to delete. Delete items and try again.
Note The link cable and calculator-to-calculator transfers are not part of this emulator, so this error cannot normally appear here. It is listed because it is on the real calculator.

ERR:MODEp. 396

You tried to store to a window variable that belongs to a different graphing mode, or to run an instruction in the wrong mode. For example, DrawInv only works in Func mode.

Tip Change the mode with MODE and try again.

ERR:NO SIGN CHNGp. 396

  • solve( or the equation solver found no sign change.
  • You tried to compute I% when FV, (Σ PMT) and PV are all ≥ 0 or all ≤ 0.
  • You tried irr( when neither CFList nor CF0 is greater than 0, or when neither is less than 0.

ERR:NONREAL ANSp. 396

In Real mode, a calculation produced a complex result. This error is not returned while graphing: the graph leaves such points out.

Tip If you want complex answers, switch to a+bi or re^θi on the MODE screen.
Tutorial

Trigger ERR:NONREAL ANS and switch to a+bi mode

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. In Real mode, the square root of −1 is not a real number. Enter √(⁻1) with 2nd√, (−), 1.
    2nd√(−)1)ENTER
  2. Press 1 to Quit, then open the mode screen.

  4. Enter the same square root again. This time the answer is i.
    2nd√(−)1)ENTER

ERR:OVERFLOWp. 396

You entered, or calculated, a number beyond the range of the calculator (about 10 to the power 100). This error is not returned while graphing.

Tutorial

Trigger ERR:OVERFLOW

The biggest numbers have an exponent of 99. Multiplying 9E99 by 10 pushes past it.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Type 9, then the exponent key 2ndEE (EE), then 99, then multiply by 10.

ERR:RESERVEDp. 397

You used a system variable in a way that is not allowed, such as storing to one of the reserved statistics variables. See Appendix A and System Variables.

ERR:SINGULAR MATp. 397

  • A singular matrix (determinant = 0) was used as the argument of x⁻¹, which is not valid.
  • SinReg or a polynomial regression produced a singular matrix because it could not find a solution, or none exists.

This error is not returned while graphing.

Tutorial

Trigger ERR:SINGULAR MAT

The second row of this matrix is twice the first, so its determinant is 0 and it has no inverse.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Open the MATRIX NAMES menu with 2ndMATRIX, choose 1:[A], and press x⁻¹ for x⁻¹ and ENTER.
    2ndMATRIX1x⁻¹ENTER
  2. Press 1 to Quit.
    1

ERR:SINGULARITYp. 397

The expression in solve( or the equation solver contains a singularity, a point where the function is not defined.

Tip Graph the function. If a solution exists, move the bounds or the initial guess (or both) away from the undefined point.

ERR:STATp. 397

You asked for a statistics calculation on lists that are not suitable.

  • Statistical analyses need at least two data points.
  • Med-Med needs at least three points in each of its three partitions.
  • When you use a frequency list, every element must be ≥ 0.
  • For a histogram, (Xmax − Xmin) ÷ Xscl must be ≤ 47.

ERR:STAT PLOTp. 397

You tried to display a graph while a stat plot that uses an undefined list is turned on. Define the list, fix the list name in the stat plot, or turn the plot off (4:PlotsOff on the STAT PLOTS menu).

ERR:SYNTAXp. 397

The command has a syntax error. Look for misplaced functions, arguments, parentheses or commas. Appendix A shows the arguments and punctuation each function needs. For example stdDev(list[,freqlist]) can be entered as stdDev(L₁) or stdDev(L₁,L₂), since the frequency list is optional.

Tutorial

Trigger ERR:SYNTAX and repair with Goto

An addition with nothing after the plus sign is incomplete.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Enter 5+ and press ENTER without typing a second number.
    5+ENTER
  2. Choose 2:Goto. The expression returns with the cursor at the problem.
    2
  3. Type the missing number 4 and press ENTER.
    4ENTER

ERR:TOL NOT METp. 397

You requested a tolerance that the algorithm cannot reach. Use a looser (larger) tolerance.

ERR:UNDEFINEDp. 397

You referenced a variable that is not defined right now. For example, you used a statistics variable when no calculation is current (because a list was edited), or one that does not apply to the latest calculation, such as a after Med-Med.

Tip Run the statistics calculation again, then use the variable.

ERR:VALIDATIONp. 397

Electrical interference made a link fail, or this calculator is not authorized to run the application.

Note The link cable and calculator-to-calculator transfers are not part of this emulator, so this error cannot normally appear here. It is listed because it is on the real calculator.

ERR:VARIABLEp. 397

You tried to archive a variable that cannot be archived, or to unarchive an application or group.

Variables that cannot be archived include the real numbers LRESID, R, T, X, Y and θ, the statistics variables under VARS, the Yvars and the AppIdList.

ERR:VERSIONp. 397

You tried to receive a variable whose version is not compatible with this calculator.

Note The link cable and calculator-to-calculator transfers are not part of this emulator, so this error cannot normally appear here. It is listed because it is on the real calculator.

ERR:WINDOW RANGEp. 398

There is a problem with the window variables. Typical causes:

  • Xmax ≤ Xmin or Ymax ≤ Ymin.
  • θmax ≤ θmin with θstep > 0 (or the reverse).
  • Tstep = 0.
  • Tmax ≤ Tmin with Tstep > 0 (or the reverse).
  • The window values are too small or too large to graph. You may have zoomed in or out beyond the numerical range of the calculator.
Tutorial

Trigger ERR:WINDOW RANGE and fix the window

Set Xmin larger than Xmax, graph, and recover with ZStandard.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Store 15 in Xmin: type 15, STO►, then VARS and choose 1:Window…, then 1:Xmin. Press ENTER.
    15STO►VARS11ENTER
  2. Xmax is still 10, which is less than Xmin. Press GRAPH.
    GRAPH
  3. Press 1 to Quit. Then restore the standard window with ZOOM 6 (ZStandard).
    1ZOOM6

ERR:ZOOMp. 398

  • A point or a line, instead of a box, was defined in ZBox.
  • A ZOOM operation returned a math error.
Tip Use ZBox again and drag out a rectangle with both width and height.

Accuracy Informationp. 398

How many digits the calculator keeps, how window values map to screen pixels, how accurate calculations are, and the range of inputs and outputs each function accepts.

Computational Accuracyp. 398

To keep results accurate, the calculator carries more digits internally than it shows.

WhatPrecision
Values in memoryUp to 14 digits with a two-digit exponent
Window variables you storeUp to 10 digits (12 digits for Xscl, Yscl, Tstep and θstep)
Displayed valuesRounded as your mode setting says, with at most 10 digits and a two-digit exponent
RegEQUp to 14 digits in Float mode; with a fixed-decimal setting it is rounded and stored with that many decimal places

How the window maps to pixels. Xmin is the centre of the leftmost pixel column and Xmax is the centre of the next-to-last column (the last column is reserved for the busy indicator). ΔX is the distance between the centres of two neighbouring pixels. Ymin is the centre of the next-to-bottom pixel row, Ymax is the centre of the top row and ΔY is the distance between the centres of adjacent rows.

ΔX and ΔY calculated from the window
Screen modeΔXΔY
Full screen(Xmax − Xmin) ÷ 94(Ymax − Ymin) ÷ 62
Horiz split screen(Xmax − Xmin) ÷ 94(Ymax − Ymin) ÷ 30
G-T split screen(Xmax − Xmin) ÷ 46(Ymax − Ymin) ÷ 50

The relationship also works in reverse: if you store a value in ΔX or ΔY from the home screen or from a program, the calculator recalculates Xmax or Ymax.

Xmax and Ymax recalculated when you enter ΔX or ΔY
Screen modeXmaxYmax
Full screenXmin + ΔX × 94Ymin + ΔY × 62
Horiz split screenXmin + ΔX × 94Ymin + ΔY × 30
G-T split screenXmin + ΔX × 46Ymin + ΔY × 50
Tutorial

Watch ΔX and Xmax follow each other

With the standard window, 20 units of X are spread over 94 pixel steps.

▶ Try this step-by-step on the online TI-84 Plus — keys light up as you go

  1. Press ZOOM 6 for ZStandard. Xmin = −10 and Xmax = 10, so ΔX = 20 ÷ 94, about 0.2128.
    ZOOM6
  2. Go back to the home screen with 2ndQUIT.
    2ndQUIT
  3. Store 0.1 in ΔX: type 0.1, STO►, then VARS, 1:Window… and choose 8:ΔX. Press ENTER. Xmax becomes −10 + 0.1 × 94 = −0.6.
    0.1STO►VARS18ENTER

Cursor Coordinates and Calculation Tolerancesp. 399

In Float mode the cursor coordinates are shown as eight-character numbers (the sign, decimal point and exponent count as characters). X and Y are updated with at most eight digits of accuracy.

On the CALCULATE menu, minimum and maximum are found with a tolerance of 1E−5, and ∫f(x)dx with a tolerance of 1E−3. So the number displayed may not be accurate to all eight shown digits, although for most functions at least five digits are right.

For fMin(, fMax( and fnInt( on the MATH menu, and for solve( in the CATALOG, you can specify the tolerance yourself.

Function Limitsp. 399

The range of input values each function accepts. Going outside gives ERR:DOMAIN or ERR:OVERFLOW. Powers of ten are written like 10^100.

Function limits
