Chapter 9: Split Screen

Show a graph and a second screen at the same time. Covers the Horiz (top/bottom) and G-T (graph/table, left/right) split-screen modes, moving between the two halves, which screens stay full-size, and the pixel limits for Pxl-On(, Text( and Output( in each mode.

Getting Started: Exploring the Unit Circlep. 137

G-T (graph-table) split screen puts a graph on the left and a table on the right. This is a handy way to see how the points of the unit circle line up with the familiar cosine and sine values of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° and so on.

You will graph the circle parametrically, with X₁T = cos(T) and Y₁T = sin(T), in Degree mode. Then you will trace around the circle in 15° steps and watch the table on the right follow the cursor.

Tutorial

Explore the unit circle in G-T mode

Set Degree, Par and G-T modes, turn off the function label, define X₁T and Y₁T, set the window, trace, and finally change the table to Ask.

Using Split Screenp. 138

The calculator has three screen modes, all chosen on one line of the MODE screen. Full shows one screen at a time. Horiz and G-T divide the display so that a graph and another screen can be seen together. Use Horiz when you want to read the home screen or an editor under the graph, and G-T when you want the table next to the graph.

Setting a Split-Screen Modep. 138

Press MODE, move the cursor to the Full/Horiz/G-T line, choose the mode you want and press ENTER.

Screen modes on the MODE screen
MODE settingWhat it shows
FullOne screen at a time (the normal display).
HorizHorizontal split: the graph on top and a second screen (home screen, Y= editor, list editor, window editor or table) on the bottom.
G-TGraph-table split: the graph on the left and the table (or list data) on the right.

The screen does not split the moment you choose the mode. The split appears when you press a key that applies to one half of it, such as GRAPH or Y=.

Note The calculator stays in the split-screen mode you picked until you go back to the MODE screen and select Full.

Stat Plots, List Data and the Table Halfp. 138

If stat plots are turned on, they are drawn on the graph half together with any x-y graphs. Press 2ndTABLE to make the table half of the split screen active; when a stat plot is on, the right-hand half then shows its list data.

  • Press ▼︎ or ▲︎ to highlight a value you want to change, then type a new number straight over it.
  • Press ▶︎ repeatedly to scroll through the columns, both table columns and list-data columns.
  • List values in this view are edited much like in the stat list editor.
Tip A split-screen display can show x-y graphs and stat plots at once, with the plotted points on the left and their lists on the right.

Full Screens and the Active Halfp. 139

Some screens never split. If you press MODE while in Horiz or G-T, the MODE screen takes over the whole display. Press a key that belongs to one half of the split screen, for example TRACE, and the split returns.

Each key goes to the half it belongs to, and the cursor moves there. TRACE puts the cursor in the half that holds the graph. 2ndTABLE puts it in the half that holds the table.

Full Screens in Horiz Modep. 140

Every screen other than the six above is shown full size in Horiz mode: the graph, home screen, Y= editor, stat list editor, window editor and table editor are the only ones that share the display. Screens such as MODE, FORMAT, menus and the MATH screens use the whole display.

To get the split screen back, press any key or key combination that shows the graph, home screen, Y= editor, stat list editor, window editor or table editor.

G-T (Graph-Table) Split Screenp. 140

In G-T mode a vertical line divides the display into a left half and a right half. The left half shows every active graph and plot. The right half shows either the table that matches the graph, or the list data that matches a stat plot.

Full Screens in G-T Modep. 141

Only the graph and the table share the display in G-T mode. Every other screen (home screen, Y= editor, window editor, MODE and so on) is shown full size.

To get back to the G-T split screen, press any key or key combination that shows the graph or the table.

Pixels in Horiz and G-T Modesp. 141

A split screen leaves the graph with fewer pixels, so the largest row and column numbers you can use in drawing and output commands are smaller than in Full mode. Pixel coordinates are given as (row, column), counted from (0,0) at the top-left corner of the graph area.

DRAW POINTS Menu Pixel Instructionsp. 141

These four instructions work on single pixels of the graph. In split-screen modes the row and column are limited like this:

  • In Horiz mode, row must be ≤ 30 and column must be ≤ 94.
  • In G-T mode, row must be ≤ 50 and column must be ≤ 46.
Pxl-On(
Pxl-On(row,column)

DRAW Menu Text( Instructionp. 142

Text( writes small-font text on the graph. In split-screen modes the position is limited like this:

  • In Horiz mode, row must be ≤ 25 and column must be ≤ 94.
  • In G-T mode, row must be ≤ 45 and column must be ≤ 46.
Text(
Text(row,column,"text")

  • In G-T mode, Text(45,0,"HI") is the lowest line of text that fits.

PRGM I/O Menu Output( Instructionp. 142

Output( prints text at a text row and column of the home screen, so its limits are in text rows (lines) and columns, not pixels. In split-screen modes the position is limited like this:

  • In Horiz mode, row must be ≤ 4 and column must be ≤ 16.
  • In G-T mode, row must be ≤ 8 and column must be ≤ 16.
Output(
Output(row,column,"text")

Displays text starting at the given row and column. It can only be used inside a program.

Note Output( can only be used within a program, not typed on the home screen.

Setting a Split-Screen Mode from the Home Screen or a Programp. 142

You can set Horiz or G-T from inside a program. Put the cursor on a blank line of the program editor, press MODE, and choose Horiz or G-T. The instruction is pasted at the cursor instead of changing the mode right away. The mode is set when the program reaches that line, and it stays set after the program ends.

Note You can also paste Horiz or G-T onto the home screen or into the program editor from the CATALOG (see Chapter 15).
